Online betting and gaming in Portugal generated €196.4m (£169.4m/$209.7m) in gross gaming revenue (GGR) in the first three months of 2023, according to Portugal’s Gaming Regulation and Inspection Service (SRIJ).

This was an increase of 24.8% from the same period in 2022, and a slight improvement of €195.3m from Portuguese operations in Q4 2022.

Online sports betting GGR made up €85.7m of the total, while other online activities accounted for €110.7m.

A total of €441.4m was wagered on sports betting during the quarter, down by 3.8% from Q4 2022 but up by 19.5% year-on-year. For other online betting, €2.97bn was placed in bets during the quarter.

In terms of which sport saw the highest number of bets, football came out on top, representing 70.6% of all bets placed on sports. Bets on basketball and tennis combined came out at 25% of the wagers.

SRIJ also noted that, on 31 March 2023, 166,300 players were registered on the Portuguese self-exclusion list.

Land-based Q1

Land-based GGR – which is generated by casinos and game machine rooms – totaled at €65.9m for the quarter, a decline of 1.7% since Q4 2022. However, this was up by 22.2% year-on-year.

During the quarter, non-banked games – which consists of poker tournaments and bingo – generated €998,490 in GGR, a rise of 50.3% yearly.

A total of €50.9m in GGR came from gaming machines, marking a 15.9% rise, while the remaining €14m in GGR came from banked games – land-based gaming that does not include poker and bingo.
